Inline with juba Foundation Peace Building Project in Kismayo Juba Foundation is seeking for a Psychological Counselor for full time

Job Purpose:

To provide psychosocial support and basic psychological counseling services to internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and vulnerable host community members affected by trauma and mental health challenges. The counselor will offer one-on-one support, facilitate referrals for advanced care, and promote emotional well-being through community-based psychosocial support activities.

   Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one counseling to individuals affected by conflict, displacement, trauma, gender-based violence (GBV), and other psychological stressors.
  • Offer Psychological First Aid (PFA) and basic counseling interventions to clients experiencing acute distress.
  • Conduct Psychosocial Support (PSS) sessions through structured group or individual activities aimed at enhancing emotional well-being and resilience.
  • Identify clients with moderate to severe mental health needs and ensure timely referral to specialized mental health services.
  • Supervise and support the work of Community-Based Counselors (CBCs) by reviewing their daily reports, offering guidance, and ensuring accurate documentation of clients met and support services provided.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to CBCs, identifying areas for capacity building and organizing regular knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and professional ethics in all counseling and supervision activities.
  • Contribute psychosocial insights and assessments to the case management team to enhance the quality of care and holistic support planning.
  • Conduct awareness sessions on mental health, stress management, and coping strategies targeting IDPs, returnees, and host community members.
  • Document cases, interventions, and referrals using approved data collection tools and submit timely reports to the project manager.
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders, including community leaders, health professionals, and service providers, to ensure coordinated and culturally appropriate responses to mental health needs.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and debriefings to enhance program quality and staff well-being

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Certified training in PFA, PSS, and basic counseling techniques is required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with vulnerable populations, especially IDPs, returnees, or survivors of trauma.
  • Prior experience supervising or working alongside community-based counselors (CBCs) is a strong asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and empathy skills, with a strong commitment to confidentiality and cultural sensitivity
  • Fluent in Somali and good working knowledge of English
  • Familiarity with local mental health referral pathways and services in Kismayo area is an advantage.
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills, including the ability to record weekly updates from clients and submit monthly and quarterly reports to management
