In this exciting role, you will support Biology, Chemistry, and Physics teachers by preparing and supervising experiments, managing laboratory operations, and assisting with practical sessions or teaching demonstrations that make science engaging and inspiring.

Job Title: Laboratory Assistant
Reporting to: Vice Principal
Location: Sheikh, Somaliland
Contract Type: Fixed Term – One year (possibility of renewal)
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Laboratory Assistant will play a vital role in supporting the effective delivery of science education at Pharo Secondary School. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Lead the setup, preparation, and coordination of laboratory experiments across all science subjects — Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
· Support teachers in planning, demonstrating, and delivering practical lessons aligned with curriculum objectives.
· Occasionally conduct or co-teach selected laboratory sessions, particularly for revision or remedial classes.
· Maintain laboratory equipment, materials, and chemicals in safe working condition and ensure proper storage.
· Develop and maintain an efficient inventory system for lab resources, consumables, and safety equipment.
· Ensure full compliance with all health, safety, and environmental standards, including proper waste disposal and chemical handling.
· Assist in the design and implementation of new practical activities and enhancements to existing ones.
· Supervise and train students on proper laboratory conduct, equipment use, and safety protocols.
· Collaborate closely with science teachers to ensure all experiments are prepared in advance and meet syllabus requirements.
· Support the preparation and supervision of practical examinations, including national and Pearson Edexcel exams.
· Provide technical advice and assistance during science fairs, exhibitions, and extracurricular science activities.
Academic Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Science Education, Laboratory Technology, or a related field.
· Strong background in Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics practical work.
· Minimum of four (4) years’ experience working in a school or college laboratory setting.
· Proven knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, chemical storage, and waste management.
· Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
· Strong communication and teamwork skills.
· Proficient in basic computer applications (Excel, email, data entry).
· Experience in teaching or assisting with science instruction.
· Certification or training in laboratory management or safety is an added advantage.
· Prior experience supporting Edexcel or other international examinations preferred.
· Demonstrated passion for science education and hands-on learning.
